Dwelling in the Question
This koan challenges our fundamental assumption about the relationship between developer and problem. We typically frame debugging as a hunt: we actively search, the bug passively hides, and discovery happens when our skill overcomes its concealment. But this linear narrative misses something essential about how understanding actually emerges in software development.
Consider your own experience with difficult bugs. How often have you stared at code for hours, seeing nothing, only to return the next day and immediately spot the issue? The code didn’t change. The bug was always there. What changed was you. You developed new context, your mind reorganized its understanding, or you simply became ready to see what was already visible. In this sense, the bug wasn’t waiting for you to find it – you were waiting to become the kind of developer who could recognize it.
This reciprocal relationship extends beyond debugging. Every problem we encounter in software development shapes us as much as we shape the solution. The authentication system that forces us to truly understand security. The performance issue that teaches us about data structures. The architecture decision that reveals our assumptions about scalability. We don’t simply solve these problems and move on unchanged. Each challenge transforms our understanding, our approach, our very capacity to see the next problem clearly.
The senior developer’s question points to a deeper truth about learning and growth in our field. Discovery is not a one-way transaction where an active agent (you) acts upon a passive object (the bug). It’s a moment of mutual revelation, where the problem shows itself and you simultaneously become capable of recognizing it. Both the finding and the readiness to find arise together.
In your next standup, when you report discovering a solution, pause to consider: What did this problem teach you? How did wrestling with it change your understanding? In the moment you saw the answer clearly, what in you had to shift for that clarity to emerge? The real progress we make isn’t just in the code we fix, but in who we become through the process of fixing it.
